Immediately after liberation, the Japanese left Incheon, selling Japanese books at a bargain price, and booths were formed to sell used books. After their departure, war victims and North Korean defectors continued to sell used books at Baedari market, forming the current Used Book Street. In the 1960s and 70s there were some thirty bookstores along the street, but now only seven remain.
